Beware of crimes of distraction
With the holidays on the way and an uptick of crimes of distraction in the county, Mission Viejo Police Services is reminding residents to be vigilant.
Crimes of distractions are illegal activities where a criminal creates a diversion to steal from a victim.
Beware of these scenarios:
- Approaching for directions: A thief may ask for directions to a store while pretending to be lost, diverting the victim's attention while they steal their valuables.
- Spilling drinks: Thieves may spill coffee or other liquids on the victim to distract them, then steal their belongings.
- Offering help: A person may ask for help with a task such as directions and then use the distraction to steal.
- Compliments and offers: Thieves may compliment a victim's jewelry and offer to exchange it for a fake piece, taking the real item.
- Creating a scene: Arguments or sudden disturbances can draw the victim's attention away from their belongings, allowing the thief to steal.
Prevention:
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
- Be wary of strangers who invade your personal space or try to touch you.
- Keep valuables zipped and close to your body.
- Don't accept gifts from strangers.
- If you feel targeted, make noise or yell for help.
“Whether you're in a busy area or alone in a parking lot, stay alert and aware of what's happening around you,” said Captain Jason Ivins, Chief of Police Services. "Staying vigilant helps discourage criminals and keeps you safer."
