Council approves new sober living home regulations and a name change to honor a beloved diving coach

The City Council on Tuesday received an update from Jeff Corless of the California Sober Living and Recovery Task Force regarding what the organization has accomplished and the status of legislation in Sacramento about issues related to sober living and recovery homes.
Following the presentation, the Council conducted a public hearing to consider an ordinance for “Group Home and Sober Living Home Regulations” to address these facilities located in Mission Viejo. It passed unanimously, and the item will be on the next Council meeting agenda for a second vote to adopt.
The Council also approved a request to name the Marguerite Aquatics Complex dive well after 8-time Olympic Coach Dr. Ron O’Brien who recently passed away. Dr. O’Brien was a Mission Viejo resident and the first diving coach at the complex. Across all major competitions, his divers won 196 gold, 113 silver and 106 bronze medals.
With the popularity of the Atrium in the Garden at the Oso Creek Golf Course, Council Members considered and approved awarding a contract to install a new HVAC system at the facility.
In other news, Orange County Fire Authority Chief Cheyne Maule spoke about the Fire Hazard Severity Maps that were developed by Cal Fire and released to the public on Monday. The City posted about these maps and features a webpage containing additional information, links and instructions to view the maps on the State’s site. Mayor Bob Reusch announced that a town hall meeting on the subject will be held on May 19, so stay tuned to the City’s website for additional details about this meeting and future opportunities for the public to provide input.
