Have emergency plans for your pets, too

With the devastating fires in Los Angeles County and ongoing strong winds, Mission Viejo Animal Services is reminding residents to have emergency plans for their pets, too.

Having an emergency plan for your family is essential and includes pets of all sizes. Your pet’s emergency kit should include food, medication, water, bedding, toys, and any other items that will help your pet feel safe. Ensure pets are wearing identification including a collar with an ID tag, even if they stay indoors.

During these windy, fire danger conditions, make sure your pet’s tags and collars are worn securely. If your pet is microchipped, confirm your registered contact information is up to date.  Additionally, make sure your fences and gates are secure to prevent pets from escaping.

In the event of a fire, evacuate early and do not leave your pets behind. Also, create a plan for large animals and livestock now. Pets cannot survive on their own and leaving them behind can endanger their lives and the lives of rescuers.
