Important information about wildlife impacted and displaced by Airport Fire

As a result of the devastating Airport Fire, which has burned nearly 23,500 acres of habitat in the Santa Ana Mountains, Mission Viejo Animal Services is alerting the public of what to do when encountering wildlife injured or displaced by the blaze. Large fires often cause animals to flee into urban areas and many may be injured, disoriented, or lost. In the Santa Ana Mountains, wildlife affected by the fire may include birds such as small birds, hawks and owls, and mammals like raccoons, opossums, foxes, bobcats, and even mountain lions. Mission Viejo Animal Services is seeking the public's assistance in the following ways:

  • Report Injured or Disoriented Wildlife: If you encounter injured, deceased, or disoriented wildlife in Robinson Ranch, Dove Canyon, Rancho Santa Margarita or Mission Viejo, keep a safe distance and report the sighting by calling 949-470-3045. Do not approach, handle, or attempt to assist the animals. Animal Control Officers will respond and ensure the animal receives appropriate help.
    • For wildlife encounters in areas such as the Canyons, Coto de Caza, Rancho Mission Viejo, and Ladera Ranch, contact OC Animal Care at 714-935-6848.
  • Avoid Feeding Wildlife: Please avoid feeding displaced wildlife, as this can cause animals to become dependent on humans for food and lead to habituation in urban settings, increasing the risk of conflict with people and pets. Additionally, human and pet food can be harmful to wildlife as it does not meet their dietary needs.
  • Reduce Hazards: Secure trash cans and remove potential hazards that may attract or endanger displaced wildlife such as pet food, open garages, or areas where animals might gain access to attics or other parts of your home.
  • Donate to Support Wildlife Care: Residents can support efforts by donating to Mission Viejo Animal Services, which helps fund medical treatment and rehabilitation for animals affected by the fire. Visit this link for more information and to donate.
