Mission Viejo Post Office building dedicated to local hero

dedication

In honor of a brave Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving this country, a ceremony was held Thursday to officially dedicate the Mission Viejo Post Office as the Major Megan McClung Post Office Building.

Major McClung attended De Portola Elementary, La Paz Intermediate and Mission Viejo High School before graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1995. She served this country with distinction, and while deployed in Al Anbar Province in Iraq, gave her life at the age of 34 on December 6, 2006. She was the first female Marine officer killed in the Iraq War and first female graduate of the Naval Academy killed in the line of duty. Her numerous awards include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.

To designate the Post Office in honor of Major McClung, H.R. 3608 was introduced by Congresswoman Young Kim on May 25, 2023. The bill passed the House of Representatives on June 3, 2024; passed the Senate by unanimous consent on November 19, 2024; and was signed into law on November 25, 2024.

The Major Megan McClung Post Office Building is located at 28081 Marguerite Parkway.
