National Girls and Women in Sports Day

The City of Mission Viejo is recognizing February 4 as National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). In honor of this day, the City celebrates its ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding athletic opportunities for girls and women throughout the community.

Through strong partnerships, Mission Viejo offers a wide range of programs that empower young females to get involved in sports including AYSO 84, Mission Viejo Girls Softball, Females in Flag, recreational introductory programs, pickleball, tennis, and more.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day highlights the importance of breaking down long-standing gender stereotypes within the sports industry and reinforces the message that girls and women belong in every aspect of athletics. This celebration also underscores the value of physical activity and encourages girls and women to build confidence, discover their strengths, and reach their full potential through sport.

One example of this commitment is the City’s partnership with Matt Leinart Flag Football to offer a “Females in Flag” league. The program has experienced significant growth and introduced a new athletic opportunity for girls in the community. To encourage participation, registration fees were waived for Mission Viejo girls for three seasons, allowing many to try the sport for the first time. In addition, the City continues to partner with Mission Viejo Girls Softball, supporting its mission to provide a competitive, inclusive, and development-focused league for young female athletes.

That's way too few sports to support when there are so many others and so many capable and eager girls to enjoy, and benefit from, them!!
