Ducklings saved after falling into a storm drain

mama and ducklings

Nine ducklings were rescued this week after falling into a storm drain.

The incident occurred near Lake Mission Viejo on Galilea when a Police Services Patrol Sergeant encountered a clearly stressed mother duck quacking around the storm drain pleading for help to rescue her babies. While the sergeant stood by to ensure the safety of the area, responding Mission Viejo Animal Services Officer DeAlmeida was able to safely rescue the fallen babies out of the storm drain using a net and brown cage.  The mama duck and her nine ducklings were safely reunited and later swam off into the Mission Viejo Lake sunrise.

Every spring, Mission Viejo Animal Services receives many calls for service regarding ducks and ducklings. Here is some information to keep in mind if ever encountering them.

Wondering if these were the ducklings reared in my back yard. The mother had nine, every year I stop using pool chemicals in December to prepare for them, they learn to swim in my pool and the mother departs and takes them to
the country club!
