Mama dog pummeled with BBs and her puppies rescued from the desert by Mission Viejo Animal Services

A dog — shot multiple times by a BB-gun — and her puppies were rescued from the desert by Mission Viejo Animal Services (MVAS) and will soon be ready for adoption.

The MVAS team learned about the pups and their mother, which was shot by a BB-gun more than 25 times, while Animal Services Commercial Enforcement Officer Adrian Enriquez was assisting a Laguna Hills resident with a permit. The resident told Officer Enriquez that he “wish he had this type of help at his other property.”

After inquiring, Officer Enriquez learned the resident has property in Perris, which is frequented by stray dogs. The resident said at least two female dogs lived on the property and had multiple litters of puppies.

Apparently, all the puppies from one recent litter went missing, leading the resident to believe they had been attacked and killed by wildlife. He felt terrible about their fate, and since he knew another litter was living on the property, he asked if MVAS could help. It turned out 15 puppies were living in and under the house.

Although Perris is out of Mission Viejo’s service area, its “A Mission for Home” program and nonprofit DAWG exist for such situations, so staff agreed to take them as rescues. Paid for entirely by DAWG, “A Mission for Home” is designed to allow the center to assist with animals in danger outside of its cities to transfer and find them forever loving homes with local families.

On March 6, 15 puppies and their mama named by staff as Priscilla, believed to be around 2 years old, arrived at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center. (Unfortunately, the other mother dog fled but the search for her continues).

Since 15 puppies are a lot to house, staff asked the San Clemente/Dana Point shelter to assist, and six puppies were transferred there. The remaining nine pups immediately received exams, vaccines, and dewormers, and mama Priscilla was sent to the vet for an exam and Xray. The Xrays revealed Priscilla had more than 25 BBs lodged under her skin from being shot multiple times.

Animal Services staff members are relieved this poor dog is now in our care to receive proper treatment and the love she deserves. Four of the smallest and least social puppies have been temporarily moved into foster homes, but the remaining five pups and mama Priscilla are currently at the shelter waiting to be adopted.  DAWG will provide all necessary care for the pups including their spay/neuter surgeries and for Priscilla including a dental, wound treatment, and spay.  The pups are unknown mixed breeds.

Thank you Mission Viejo Animal Services, Dana Point and San Clemente shelter and DAWG for helping these sweet, innocent animals!!!! I am so thankful to live in a community that helps in these horrific situations. I have to say that I hope the “scums of the earth” that did this to these sweet and innocent animals rot in hell!! So disgusting & just so imaginable that we actually live with so-called people that could do such a thing. I’m very thankful you are all finding them loving, forever homes. God bless you!!!

God bless mission Viejo animal shelter. Love all of you for taking on this rescue. Makes me so proud to be an over thirty year resident of Mission Viejo. We have had several loving animals from the shelter. You are amazing and are the finest example of how a shelter should operate. In fact years ago you took a feral cat from Long Beach from my mother in laws house and her litter. You fixed the mother and let the kittens nurse from her till ready for adoption. Going well beyond our city limits to take care of beautiful animals. Thank you

My husband and I are 44-yr residents of MV & we love everything about MV. I am especially proud & comforted by our animal services dept. Last Sat. we discovered a hummingbird trapped under the dome of a skylight INSIDE our kitchen. My husband tried to get the little creature to sit on a rag attached to a pole but every time he started to lower it, the bird flew back up to the top of the skylight. We could see it was tiring. It stopped fluttering its wings tho it had nothing to cling to—just the crack between the top of the wall & the beginning of the skylight. So I called Animal Services. They told me if someone was in the area, they’d send him out. Well, someone CAME. And immediately got her long, tall net out, secured the little bird within it & released her into the yard. The tiny being sat on her hand & allowed her to stroke it before taking off. THAT’S the kind of Animal Services we have! And cheers to Priscilla & her brood finding the very best homes!
