Volunteers sought to help paint dynamic ‘Tunnel Vibration’ mural on January 28

UPDATE: registration for this event is full.

The City is seeking volunteers to help put the finishing touches on the dynamic “Tunnel Vibration” project.

Nestled on the Oso Creek Trail at Jeronimo and Arbolitos, the tunnel has been transformed with the vibrant “Tunnel Vibration” mural. Using the art and science of color, the mural creates a whimsical optical illusion in which high-contrast colors appear to visibly vibrate when placed next to each other.

On Saturday, January 28, the City will host a community painting day from 10 am to noon calling for volunteers aged 10 and older to help finish this unique art project. Painting experience is not required, and all supplies will be provided. Participants should wear closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, and old clothing they don’t mind getting dirty. Bottled water and snacks will be available for volunteers while supplies last.

Volunteer space is limited, so register today at this link.

Once the mural is fully complete, this visual delight will be a wonderful place to gather for events. Over the next few months, the City will host a series of free concerts that make full use of the tunnel’s acoustic properties and extend the “Tunnel Vibration” theme. Stay tuned for more information.

please, someone, re-think this idea...the entire area and trail is so serene so naturistic...then to happen upon one of my favorite little bends in the path, the mysterious naturla tunnel and total wilderness beyond... it has always been such a joy and to think in the midst of all that beauty to suddenly come upon that tunnel all 60's psychedelic...i cant imagine a worse eye sore...sometiems its just so much better to leave things the way they are...please

Why did you do this to a beautiful nature trail? I've been walking this trail for 25 years and was shocked when I saw the tunnel....so ugly.
Why not paint a nice nature scene? Sorry.... I'm not a negative person but it is atrocious.

I agree with dyann and anonymous above. Yes, sometimes it's better to leave things alone. M.V. has a habit of filling in every empty, open space with something. I'm especially referring to the over abundance of trees, shrubs, plants that are ubiquitous in this city. Look, they did it again with this dizzying tunnel! Less is more.

What happened to the original artist and design. This is an eyesore...so disappointing. Who in the world made this decision????It is not in alignment with nature and peace and serenity.

Obviously, we are in the midst of a re-branding of Mission Viejo. We need improvements to public areas like the recently completed outdoor seating areas above LMV. The color story selection of the furniture, planters, foliage etc. blends well with the overall MV aesthetic.
The Oso Creek tunnel, however is a conundrum. Is it supposed to remind residents of Willy Wonka meets with Totally 80’s fashion? Dizzying indeed! Neon oranges, purples, greens? It’s fun, but also feels out of place. Give us a clue as to what’s happening. Are we leaning towards an urban Street Art Vibe like Portland or Seattle? Personally, I would love to see more vibrant sculptures and mural installations all around the city. Big question is will residents get any say in future color design plans?

PS. I vote that our city gets 5 stars for natural landscape design! We enjoy year round blooms, thoughtful presentation and amazing maintenance!

People in Orange County love to complain about everything! Ok Karen’s lol. The mural is artsy and beautiful. If you don’t like the tunnel, stay at home Karen!! Lol
