National Prescription Medication Take Back Day is April 27

police officers with bags of prescription pills

The City of Mission Viejo and Orange County Sheriff's Department will take part in National Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27 as part of an ongoing effort to prevent drug abuse and theft.

The City will host a drive-through drop-off location from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot at 200 Civic Center.  The Sheriff's Department is working on the collection with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  Folks can remain anonymous, and there is no cost to drop off prescription medications, which can be in original packaging, bottles or in a zip-lock bag. Since the packaging is incinerated along with the medication, there's no need to remove labels.  No sharps, Marijuana and pressure canisters, however.

Since 2012, Mission Viejo, in partnership with the DEA, has collected about 5,410 pounds of unused and unwanted medications during these events.  Through this valued partnership and thanks to proactive citizens, these events continually provide a positive impact on the community.
